The Arbaeen pilgrimage, from Najaf to Karbala, and the visitation of the holy shrine of Imam Husayn (peace be upon him), which coincides with the fortieth day after the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, is one of the largest religious rituals of Shia Muslims and among the largest peaceful gatherings in world history. The “Arbaeen Missed Pilgrims” ceremony in Iran reflects this ritual, held by those who cannot participate in the Najaf-Karbala route, and in recent years it has become one of the country’s most extensive religious and social gatherings.
In recent years, the Arbaeen Missed Pilgrims walk, which has become one of Iran’s largest religious gatherings, is organized with broad public participation and the support of cultural and social institutions. The Islamic Propaganda Organization, in cooperation with other bodies, plays a key role in facilitating infrastructure and supporting public activities, including the establishment of Mawkibs (resting stations).
According to official statistics, this year’s Arbaeen Missed Pilgrims ceremony saw about 15,670,000 participants at more than 4,356 locations across the country, and with over 16,000 public Mawkibs, this spiritual ritual was held more magnificently than ever before.
